Summary

What Begbie Did Next。。。。 a fun and grisly book full of laughs and OTT violence, the slow burn descent of mild-mannered Jim Francis into the Frank Begbie of old as he returns to Edinburgh to investigate the death of a family member pays off in spades, with buckets of blood, but it’s let down by poor writing。 There are plot-holes aplenty, most of the secondary characters aren’t fleshed enough that when they meander in and out of the story it can be tricky remembering who is who, and I’m still not What Begbie Did Next。。。。 a fun and grisly book full of laughs and OTT violence, the slow burn descent of mild-mannered Jim Francis into the Frank Begbie of old as he returns to Edinburgh to investigate the death of a family member pays off in spades, with buckets of blood, but it’s let down by poor writing。 There are plot-holes aplenty, most of the secondary characters aren’t fleshed enough that when they meander in and out of the story it can be tricky remembering who is who, and I’m still not entirely clear what everyone’s motivation was, not to mention I had to reread several scenes to try and visualise what was going on。 。。。more

I thought this was a decent story。 I enjoyed it, but didn’t think it was Welch’s’ best, though I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s read the authors others books, especially Trainspotting。

I loved this - a murder mystery with Begbie at the centre of it - what could possibly go wrong。

It’s rare I can sit down and want to charge through to the conclusion of a book。 I got through this in two days。 It kept me hooked。This is a dark journey into the world of Francis Begbie。 In this, he goes from drunken punch and stab merchant and local heavy to full blown, calculated psychopath。 Before, he was violent and had a hair trigger temper。 He was a force of nature, a rampaging ball of fury。 Now, he is more a Dexter Morgan style killer。It poses interesting questions of nature vs。 nurture It’s rare I can sit down and want to charge through to the conclusion of a book。 I got through this in two days。 It kept me hooked。This is a dark journey into the world of Francis Begbie。 In this, he goes from drunken punch and stab merchant and local heavy to full blown, calculated psychopath。 Before, he was violent and had a hair trigger temper。 He was a force of nature, a rampaging ball of fury。 Now, he is more a Dexter Morgan style killer。It poses interesting questions of nature vs。 nurture and ultimately leaves us none the wiser in Begbie’s case。 。。。more

Blood-soaked jailbird Frank Begbie is now a successful artist known as Jim Francis who lives in California with his beautiful young wife Melanie and their two lovely daughters。 Frank’s new life crashes into his old one as his son is murdered in Edinburgh, drawing him back to the old country and into a slew of old memories, rivalries – and habits。 The premise of this book is so outwardly ridiculous that when I first read the blurb I thought Irvine Welsh must have lost the plot。 The idea that Begb Blood-soaked jailbird Frank Begbie is now a successful artist known as Jim Francis who lives in California with his beautiful young wife Melanie and their two lovely daughters。 Frank’s new life crashes into his old one as his son is murdered in Edinburgh, drawing him back to the old country and into a slew of old memories, rivalries – and habits。 The premise of this book is so outwardly ridiculous that when I first read the blurb I thought Irvine Welsh must have lost the plot。 The idea that Begbie, a psychopathic bogan thug, could possibly transform himself into a successful artist living in California with an attractive and educated young bride, seemed too far-fetched。 The very idea seemed so silly I didn’t think any writer could pull it off, and I prepared myself for a literary disaster that would no doubt lower Mr。 Welsh in my esteem。 As it turned out, the opposite happened。 Welsh was not only able to make Begbie’s astounding transformation seem plausible, but believable。 I suspect he chose such a ridiculous scenario on purpose just to blow people’s minds with his skilled characterization, or to show people the danger of making assumptions about people。 In either case his project is a stunning success。 The Blade Artist is one of the most intricate and fascinating character portraits I’ve encountered, and continues to meet – and even in some ways excel – the high standard established by other entries in the series。 。。。more

Same Psycho, Different StyleThis was a fascinating continuation of the events from Trainspotting and Porno as the man formerly known as Francis Begbie takes center stage in his own story set in his 50's, roughly 10 years after Porno。 Now living a reformed and rehabilitated life in California as professional sculptor "Jim Francis", an unfortunate turn of events stemming from his troubled past calls him back to Edinburgh after a long absence。 The Blade Artist is a departure from Irvine Welsh's tra Same Psycho, Different StyleThis was a fascinating continuation of the events from Trainspotting and Porno as the man formerly known as Francis Begbie takes center stage in his own story set in his 50's, roughly 10 years after Porno。 Now living a reformed and rehabilitated life in California as professional sculptor "Jim Francis", an unfortunate turn of events stemming from his troubled past calls him back to Edinburgh after a long absence。 The Blade Artist is a departure from Irvine Welsh's trademark phonetic Scotts, which makes it much easier to read for those who struggle with the dialect。 It's an element I've grown to love about his writing, although I can't deny that I finished this book a lot faster than even some of his shorter works。 Welsh still doesn't use quotation marks, however he writes in mostly American English to coincide with Begbie's own decaying Scottish accent having lived abroad for so many years。 The book also marks the series' return of third-person narration, which is used quite heavily, especially compared its precursors。 This technique is deployed to create uncertainty for the reader as to what exactly is going through this supposed reformed man's mind。 I wasn't expecting much when I started this book。 Often when an extended series of any kind, whether it be books, television, or movies, eventually run out of steam when the creator shifts the primary focus to other characters for the sake of the series' longevity。 This isn't one of those instances and I was blown away by how much more mature this composition is: "She simply acknowledged that her family's liberal values had bestowed on her a magnanimity and concern for others who navigated life in less ostentatious comfort than her, understanding that this relative affluence had also given her the breathing space to indulge her calling。" Eftir ye bury your pus into a few barry Welsh stories, ye ken what I mean, likesay。 Is it the most likely or even believable story? Probably not。 It's fair enough though, and it elevates the Francis Begbie character to a much higher level of complexity compared to his previous installments of uncontained violence。 Can psychopaths can be rehabilitated and eventually function in civilized society? Or "Once a psycho, always a psycho"? Those are the questions this story's axis tilts on and it's a very dark and twisted ride。 。。。more

A welcome addition to the saga of Trainspotting's revered psychopath。 Frank Begbie, now Jim Francis, has transformed into a sculptor/painter living in California with his beautiful wife and two daughters。 When his sister, Elspeth, calls to tell him his first born son has been found dead back in Edinburgh, he suspects foul play and returns to investigate。Will Jim keep it all together or will the dark underworld of sunny Leith draw out the Franco of old? I found myself unable to stop turning pages to find out as the tension of the story built, wondering how much he'd really changed。 The book provides plenty of Begbie backstory, detailing parts of his dodgy upbringing that made him into the man he was and how he overcame his shortcomings during the reformation years with the encouragement of an art-therapist (later his wife) and prison screw John Dick。 The plot itself is a murder-mystery with plenty of radge bawbags who had it in for young Sean to keep you guessing until the end。 As is common with Welsh novels, characters from other books come and go throughout the story, most notably sex-obsessed cab driver Juice Terry (Porno, Glue), and then a chance meeting right on the very last page hints that the rollercoaster life journey of Francis James Begbie is far from over。。。 。。。more

This book has grown on me since the first time I read it。 Previously, I had a bit put off by how the hardboiled/noir pastiche seemed so far removed from the established 'Trainspotting' style and universe。 However, I do enjoy the character study of Begbie offered up by Welsh - even if I'm not a massive fan of his transformation into a sort of supervillain from a more realistic menace as the Welsh novels continue。 This book has grown on me since the first time I read it。 Previously, I had a bit put off by how the hardboiled/noir pastiche seemed so far removed from the established 'Trainspotting' style and universe。 However, I do enjoy the character study of Begbie offered up by Welsh - even if I'm not a massive fan of his transformation into a sort of supervillain from a more realistic menace as the Welsh novels continue。 。。。more

。。。more

still one of the most terrifying characters ever to be reinvented for fiction。I loved the first 200 pages as they were filled more with impending menace, than violence but the finally was just too out there, turning a psycho thug into a calculated killing machine。No sure how much more Irvine can push Begbie without losing the soul of what made him believable and terrifyingly human。 Still worth the effort and I am sure hardcore fans will love it。。
